ZHdK Research Tours | 'Art in Sacred Places: Then and Now. Zurich’s Revolutionaries'
The tour begins at the Main Police Station, featuring Augusto Giacometti’s impressive flower-covered ceiling, and continues through Zurich’s main churches, tracing the city’s history of Reformation. Along the way, discover Zurich-based revolutionaries, from Ulrich Zwingli, the fiery preacher and reformer at his modest home in Helferei, to Lenin’s exile on Spielgasse, just steps away from the Dadaists’ gatherings at the nearby Cabaret Voltaire. The tour explores notable artworks within the churches, from Sigmar Polke to Harald Naegeli— Switzerland’s street art pioneer whose ‘Totentanz Cycle’ (Dance of Death) is still located inside the Grossmünster: after waiting almost a decade he had finally received permission in 2018 to paint it inside the church. Naegeli is the first Swiss artist who had to serve a prison sentence for his public artistic creations and at one point had to flee to Germany. At the Wasserkirche, where Zurich’s patron saints Felix and Regula were executed, visitors will witness a performance by Parzival, a contemporary artist dedicated to world peace since the 1970s. The tour concludes at the Predigerkirche, a peaceful refuge in the heart of the city, known for its impressive architecture and serene atmosphere. Meeting point: Giacometti-Halle Amtshaus I, Bahnhofquai 3, 8001 Zürich MARIA SORENSEN is an art curator, writer and a self confessed photography junkie. Using her background in film and visual arts, her curatorial practice deals with important societal issues using strong and expressive artistic language. Among her recent projects is an exhibition on state and self- censorship UnSaid, a theatre festival of Russian-language anti-war drama held at the Helferei and serving on a jury of Iranian Film Festival Zurich. Her writing on art and culture has been published by Kunstmuseum Bern, London-based Index on Censorship, Berlin-based On Curating and Zurich-based research initiative Ministry of Post-Collapse Art. Her photography will be a part of the Art Flow exhibition held in September. She holds a postgraduate degree in Curating and is currently doing MA in Cultural Critique at ZHdK, Zurich University of Arts.

Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich | Concert tonhalleAIR: 'Superar Suisse'
"Superar" means "to master something" or "to surpass oneself" in Spanish. This is what the Superar Suisse musical programme is all about, with which a non-profit association supports children and young people regardless of their background. They receive free lessons, which take place exclusively in groups - i.e. in a choir or orchestra - and are led by professional musicians. At tonhalleAIR, Superar Suisse presents itself in all its facets: to kick off the afternoon, the Superar choirs perform a sing-along with Zurich school classes and take the audience on a musical journey - singing along is encouraged! Then it's the turn of SuperStart's youngest talents. Finally, the Superar Orchestra under its artistic director Laida Alberdi will perform new and familiar pieces.

ZHdK Research Tours | 'The Future Behind Us: Swiss Oil Experience'
Oil’s presence is invisible, yet it drenches everything around us. At a time when the future of oil is up for debate —amid promises of an energy transition, record levels of crude extraction, and robust profits for oil and gas companies— this archive tour examines the collision between early ecological concerns and the efforts of oil companies to shape socioeconomic narratives through cultural production. Focusing on Switzerland’s trente glorieuses period —from the postwar years to the 1973 oil crisis— the tour explores how oil was represented in visual culture to support the myth of progress. It centers on two key archival sources: a 1949 film by the Shell Film Unit and the 1956 exhibition Welt des Erdöls at Zurich’s Kunstgewerbemuseum, also sponsored by Shell. To ground these representations in their local context, the workshop also draws on the research and archival materials of the Schweizerisches Sozialarchiv, offering a socioeconomic and historical perspective. Together, these elements interweave history, culture, and energy politics through a distinctly Swiss lens. Meeting point: Schweizerisches Sozialarchiv Stadelhoferstrasse 12, 8001 Zurich ISABEL PINIELLA is a Swiss-based cultural analyst and postdoctoral researcher at the Institut d’Histoire du Temps Présent in Paris. She completed her doctoral studies at the Institute of History at the University of Bern, within the Global Studies Program. She holds both a bachelor's and a master’s degree from the Pompeu Fabra University and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where she specialized in history, philosophy, and aesthetics. Currently enrolled in the Cultural Critique, Curatorial Studies program, she is driven by an interest in rereading history through artistic practices and the essay-exhibition format.

Löwenbräukunst | DJ Set with Yamuna
Born and raised in Zurich with Jamaican roots, Yamuna has always been driven by the powerful rhythms of dancehall, reggae and Afrofusion. What began as a personal passion quickly developed into a creative project with a global vision: With @black.pancakes, she founded a platform that makes independent BIPoC artists visible - a music blog that not only shares sounds, but also stories, perspectives and community. Today, Yamuna not only stands for finely curated playlists, but also for energetic DJ sets that reflect her cultural influences and love of diversity. With each of her selections, she connects the past, present and future - and shows that music is far more than just sound: it is a feeling, a movement, a common language. At Zurich Art Weekend 2025, Yamuna brings her world of sound to the ramp at Löwenbräukunst - surprising, multi-layered, full of emotion.

Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich | Concert tonhalleAIR 'Paavo Järvi & Jean-Yves Thibaudet'
The Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich not only hosts tonhalleAIR, it also performs a large orchestral concert in the Münsterhof. The programme includes three works to revel in, marvel at and dance to: Aram Khachaturian's piano concerto features everything from Armenian melodies and virtuoso effects to a singing saw - everything this composer had to offer in terms of sparkling ideas. Bizet's "Carmen" suite combines some of the most famous melodies in music history. And Kodály's "Dances from Galanta", inspired by Hungarian folk music, provides a brilliant finale. And the encore? That was decided by our followers on Instagram by vote. They chose the ‘Hungarian Dance’ No. 5 by Brahms!

Shedhalle | PERFORMANCE: 'TANGERINE' BY GÖKSU KUNAK
The performative installation 'tangerine' deals with the so-called Susurluk car crash of 1996, which had a lasting impact on society and politics in Turkey as it revealed the existence of a triangular network of organized crime, politics, and state. While passing through various stations in the room, Kunak revisits the imagery that this event has generated, ranging from newspaper reports to a soap opera or film. These intermingle with abstract notions of the idea of innocence in relation to loss, grief, heartbreak and psychosis. We kindly ask you to reserve a spot to help us estimate attendance. Reservations are not required for entry.

Kunsthalle Zürich | TALK BERNHARD MENDES BÜRGI AND FANNY HAUSER IN CONVERSATION
In this conversation with Fanny Hauser (Director Kunsthalle Zürich), Bernhard Mendes Bürgi – curator, art historian, and founding Director of Kunsthalle Zürich (1990–2001) – will reflect on his exhibition history and provide insights into the founding of Kunsthalle Zürich. The talk will be followed by a book signing at Kunsthalle Zürich. Mendes Bürgi’s new book "Bernhard Mendes Bürgi. Ausstellungen 1982–2016" is published by Hatje Cantz in collaboration with the LUMA Foundation and Kunsthalle Zürich. The book’s focus is on a generously designed list of all 110 exhibitions for which Bürgi was responsible, particularly as director of the Kunsthalle Zürich and the Kunstmuseum Basel, accompanied by many installation views. In the publication, a detailed discussion with Philipp Kaiser sheds light on Bürgi’s curatorial principles. The special significance of the “ideal solo exhibition”, which always emerges anew from a close collaboration with the respective artist, becomes apparent. The conversation will take place in German. Following the talk there will be an opportunity to buy the publication and have it signed at the Kunsthalle Zürich bookshop.

A conversation with British-Kenyan (Maasai Kikuyu) artist Grace Ndiritu, whose practice spans film, painting, textiles, performance and social practice. In her long-term body of work 'Healing the Museum' (2012–present), she introduces non-rational healing methodologies such as shamanism to re-activate the ‘sacredness’ of art spaces. ZHdK Research Tours | 'The Captured Animal: Encounter at the ETH Bildarchiv Zürich'
How does photography capture, distort, or deny the animal? This research tour offers a critically engaged journey through the ETH Zurich Image Archive, focusing on images that frame animals as companions, laborers, specimens, and objects of fascination. From portraits of domesticated creatures to staged taxidermy and scientific images, the selected materials expose historical ways of classifying, displaying, and disciplining the non-human. What traces of affection, violence, or curiosity linger in these images? Through close looking and collective discussion, participants will interrogate the politics of visibility embedded in archival practices—asking what is shown, what is omitted, and what remains unspeakable. This curated encounter invites reflection on the visual legacies that continue to shape how we see, represent, and relate to the non-human world today. Meeting point: ETH Main Building, Rämistrasse 101, 8006 Zürich CRISTINA MALERBA is a curator and art researcher. She is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in Cultural Critique and Curatorial Studies at ZHdK, Zurich, after completing a BA in Visual Arts at NABA, Milan. She curated the group exhibition Pianerottolo in collaboration with the collective SPECIFIC at BiM, Milan. She has worked as an assistant at Galleria Martina Simeti and at Archivio Turi Simeti, where she contributed to exhibition-making and archival practices. ROUTE: Blue Velvet Projects → Karma International → Galerie Urs Meile → flatmarkus → Damien & The Love Guru

Led by: Ilaria Micale
Born in Milan and raised in Geneva, Ilaria Micale discovered her passion for art while studying architecture at the EPFL, where she began painting and organizing small exhibitions. This early engagement inspired her to pursue a Master's degree in History and Theory of Art and Architecture at the Accademia di Mendrisio, deepening her understanding of art history. For the last two years she has been sharing her enthusiasm as a museum guide in LAC and now as a city guide in Zurich, where she combines her academic knowledge with her broad cultural interests. She currently lives and works in Zurich.

BOOK LAUNCH & TALK – WALTER PFEIFFER: 'VIS-À-VIS'
With Walter Pfeiffer, Devrim Bayar, Simon Castets, and Daniel Merritt. Introduction by Stefanie Hessler. Swiss Institute presents a panel with photographer Walter Pfeiffer on the occasion of the publication of 'Vis-à-vis', a volume encapsulating over 50 years of his career. The panel is followed by a book signing. 'Vis-à-vis' presents the most extensive cross section of Swiss artist Walter Pfeiffer’s work to date. Assuming the indexical format of the abécédaire, complete with hand-drawn illustrations and a freewheeling glossary written by the artist, this publication unites some of Pfeiffer’s most iconic images with never-before-seen artworks. At once a meticulously crafted artist’s book and a comprehensive monograph, 'Vis-à-vis' demonstrates the artist’s sustained commitment to exquisite publications and extraordinary contribution to the history of photography. Newly commissioned texts by Devrim Bayar, Dean Kissick, Meredith North, Jose Segebre, and Wayne Koestenbaum reflect on five decades of his artistic output and its enduring influence on contemporary photography. Newly commissioned texts by Devrim Bayar, Dean Kissick, Meredith North, Jose Segebre, and Wayne Koestenbaum accompany Pfeiffer's photographs, situating him within broader art historical narratives. Published by Pacific and Swiss Institute, 2024.

At the two-day festival on the Münsterhof, the musicians of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich will also be joining forces with other ensembles - for example with the Zurich Youth Symphony Orchestra, with whom they have been collaborating for a long time. The JSOZ will now be conducted by Paavo Järvi for the first time. The programme includes two of the most popular orchestral works of all time: the melodies from Grieg's "Peer Gynt" suite can be heard not only in concert halls, but also in films and commercials. And Dvořák's symphony "From the New World" was a resounding success at its premiere in New York in 1893. It was influenced by American spirituals as well as the folk music of his Bohemian homeland. He did not simply want to copy the musical themes that inspired him, said Dvořák, "I study certain melodies until I am so imbued with their characteristic features that I can form a musical picture for myself". Now this picture, with its equally rich and subtle colours, closes the festival on the Münsterhof.

Her curatorial interests focus on critical mediation and collective research, particularly within visual art history and archival contexts.

INTERDISCIPLINARY TALKS | with artist Jeffrey Gibson, Music Director Paavo JÄrvi, & curator Abigail Winograd
ZAW x Kunsthaus Zürich x Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich With Jeffrey Gibson, artist, and Paavo Järvi, Music Director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, moderated by Abigail Winograd, curator of 'boshullichi/inlʋchi, we will continue to change'. Interdisciplinary Talks seek to generate unconventional exchanges between creative thinkers who are active at the highest level of excellence in the arts, humanities, the natural sciences, and public life. Organised on the occasion of ZURICH ART WEEKEND June program and kindly hosted by schwarzescafé / Luma Westbau, we delve into the current conversations celebrating the vastness of interdisciplinary work by leading artists, curators, writers, academics, scientists, and researchers who bridge the gap between these fields. We encourage “out of the box” discussions, shared perspectives, and lively debate. Organized in partnership with Kunsthaus Zürich and Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich. JEFFREY GIBSON Jeffrey Gibson (b. 1972, Colorado Springs, CO; lives and works in New York) is an artist, curator and educator. He grew up in major urban centres in the United States, Germany, Korea and the UK. He is a citizen of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent. Gibson earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995 and his Master of Arts in painting at the Royal College of Art, London, in 1998. PAAVO JÄRVI Paavo Järvi is regarded as one of the most important conductors today, working in close partnership with the greatest international orchestras. He is the Music Director of the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Artistic Director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, and the founder and Artistic Director of the Estonian Festival Orchestras as well as the Pärnu Music Festival in Estonia. His accolades include a Grammy Award, the Sibelius Medal, the 2022 European Cultural Prize, and the Order of the White Star, awarded by the President of Estonia in 2013 for his outstanding contribution to Estonian culture. Shedhalle | TALK: "WATER: A GEOARCHIVE", RESEARCH-IN-THE-MAKING BY Su Yu Hsin
Building upon her ongoing research into "Water: A Geoarchive," Su Yu Hsin is excited to present a research-in-the-making that delves into the interface between Shedhalle and Lake Zurich. The site-specific exploration engages with the environmental history of Shedhalle, using polyphonic reimagining of water as a medium. Through cross-referencing with the historical cartography of the Shedhalle and sonic interventions, the surveying work is an act of recording the spatial and material dimensions of the industrial incursions into the water bodies. Central to this inquiry is the exploration of how water itself communicates the artificial filling of the site. Splashing, seeping, and eroding, water imprints the traces of its passage, carrying the memory of where it once flowed and what it once touched. Su Yu Hsin's research-based work is characterized by site-specific investigations into diverse water bodies, from the Akaike River in Taipei, the Liwu River in Hualian and the Salt River in Phoenix. These projects develop contextual narratives from the perspective of the river, exploring its encompassing ecological and relational networks. Her artistic investigations examine the suppression of waterways within urban landscapes and colonial cartographic practices, as in ‘water sleep II Akaike River under Xizhang Road’ (2019). Through questioning the formatting scalar relations between the field, laboratory and database, ‘frame of reference I & II’ (2020) reflects on the interplay between technology and observational networks along the river, where human and non-human elements converge. Recent works also delve into the complexities of water scarcity and the material footprint of computer technologies, as evidenced by 'Particular waters' (2023). We kindly ask you to reserve a spot to help us estimate attendance. Reservations are not required for entry.
